Web Design and Development
Unless otherwise agreed, Pollenation ensure that all of the sites we build are:
- Standards Compliant (XHTML 1.0 & CSS2)
- CSS Layout
- Semantic HTML - (using html tags that mean something, e.g. h1-h4 for headers, em for emphasising things)
- Browser Tested on Microsoft Windows XP, Mac OSX and Ubuntu Linux for the following browsers:
- Internet Explorer (5.0+), Firefox 1, Safari 1.3, Opera 7+,
- Accessibility conformance to industry standards (WAI, WCAG Level 2/3 where appropriate http://www.w3.org/WAI/guid-tech.html)
Why does this make a difference?
- Search engines prefer well built html and css that they can understand
- A site built using the above will use less bandwidth and appear faster and more responsive to users
- People aren't excluded from the site because they use a different/old browser/computer or they are from a group that may have accessibility problems
What else can we do?
- Three levels of cross browser testing for usability and/or design compliance (see http://python.pollenation.net for exhaustive example)
- light : Internet Explorer (5.5+), Firefox 1.5+
- standard : Internet Explorer (5.0+), Firefox 1, Safari 1.3, Opera 7+,
- exhaustive: Internet Explorer (5.0+), Firefox 1, Netscape (6+), Safari 2+, Konqueror 3+, Opera 6+, AOL 9, Lynx, (E)Links
- Accessibility conformance to W3C specification (WAI, WCAG Priority 1,2 and some 3)
- Consult with accessibility groups on extended accessibility features
- Information architecture development
- Web page performance profiling
